MW4 Meta Report: The Han 86 Is Still King, But Losing Ground
No tuning patch yet, but the launch meta is already moving: the Han 86 still leads while the Hyeon Burst and X-58 Nyx climb. Best guns, loadouts and DMZ notes for the week.

Three days in, the Han 86 is still the most-used gun in Modern Warfare 4, but its grip is loosening. About a quarter of players now run it, down from well over a third at launch, while the Hyeon Burst has more than tripled its share. No weapon tuning has landed yet, so every shift this week comes from players figuring out the 33-gun launch pool, not from patches.
What changed
There has been no balance patch since launch. The 24 October update was fixes only: better Hijack spawns, a Search & Destroy defuse-distance fix, an M4 muzzle visual bug, and a batch of DMZ fixes covering the exfil helicopter and squadmates wrongly marked MIA. Infinity Ward has said it is already looking at weapon tuning for this week, but there are no details yet. Expect the first real balance pass soon and treat this week’s list as the last pure launch meta.
We updated popularity for eleven guns in our weapon data. The headline numbers:
- Han 86 fell from 37.8% to 26.7%, but it is still first by a long way.
- M4 dropped from 16.8% to 11%.
- VEL 46 slipped slightly to 15.4% and is now the second most-picked gun overall.
- Hyeon Burst jumped from 2.6% to 8.6%.
- Patriot XMR, Oden and Wz.55 Striga all at least doubled from low starting points.
Tiers are unchanged this week. A couple of guns are knocking on the door (see below), but we want a second week of data, or the first tuning patch, before we move anyone.
Best guns right now
These are the S tier picks, with close-range TTK and current pick rate from our weapon data:
- Han 86: 243ms up close, 26.7% pick rate. Still the fastest-killing rifle at close range and the easiest to control. If you are unsure what to run, run this.
- VEL 46: 252ms, 15.4%. The fastest SMG at every range. It owns small maps and will be everywhere once Shipment arrives.
- ISO Nightshade: 260ms, 7.5%. The default SMG, suppressed with the meta build. A little slower than the VEL but steadier.
- M4: 296ms, 11%. Slower up close than the Han, but more forgiving at mid range. The Hurricane Apex gives it a second life at max level.
- Kastov 762: 300ms, 4.6%. Hits harder and reaches further than the M4 if you can handle the kick. Its pick rate is creeping up.
- Oris 8.6: 707ms at range, 0.7%. A niche pick that plays like a fast sniper. Hardly anyone runs it, but on lanes nothing trades better when you hit your shots.
- KG-7 Vulcan: 5% pick rate. The default sniper and the one-shot option for S&D and big maps.
Loadouts to run
- M4 All-Rounder: the easiest meta class to play well. Ghost, Blood Rush and Battle Hardened, with a Trophy System.
- Han 86 Starter: everything in it unlocks early, so it is the class to run from Level 4 while you work towards the M4.
- ISO Hill Rush: our Hardpoint class. The suppressed ISO keeps you off the radar while you rotate to the next hill.
- Solo M4 + ISO: the DMZ kit for solo players. A rifle for open ground and an SMG for buildings.
With Shipment going live in 6v6 on 27 October, have the VEL 46 Shredder ready too.
Sleepers and fallers
Hyeon Burst (up). Its pick rate is up from 2.6% to 8.6%, and it now ranks fourth overall. It has the best ease score of any rifle on our list (9.4) and a 260ms close-range TTK, so players who can land bursts are finding it competitive with the S tier. It stays A tier for now. If it holds this level after the tuning patch, it moves up.
X-58 Nyx (up). Still a small share at 1.8%, but it is starting to show up alongside the top SMGs in more meta rankings. The integral suppressor and hipfire build make it a solid ISO alternative. We are watching it for a move to S.
Han 86 (down, but still on top). Losing nearly a third of its users in a few days mostly reflects players unlocking alternatives, not the gun getting worse. It is also the most likely target if the first tuning pass goes after the top rifles.
DMZ this week
The 24 October fixes addressed the two worst DMZ problems from launch weekend: the exfil helicopter disappearing with players on board, and kicked squadmates being marked MIA. Players can also take back UAV Towers that enemy squads have captured, which breaks up the map-wide no-go zones that formed on day one. For solo players, the M4 and ISO pairing remains the safest kit.
