MW4 DMZ beginner's guide: what you keep, what you lose and how to survive Hajin
Everything a new DMZ player needs: secure slots, infil costs, the Wanted system, what happens when your Operator goes MIA, and which base stations unlock when.

DMZ is Modern Warfare 4’s extraction mode: you drop into Hajin with a squad, take what you can from AI forces and rival players, and only keep it if you get out alive. This guide walks through a deployment from start to finish and covers what you actually risk each time. For key rooms, bosses and points of interest, use our DMZ Intel map.
The one rule that matters
Nothing is yours until you exfil. Loot, cash and weapons only make it back to the base if you extract. The exception is DMZ XP: you keep it even when a run goes wrong, so a failed deployment is never a total loss.
Before you deploy
Pick how you go in. You can run a Story Mission, a Dynamic Operation or Free Roam. Squad Fill tops you up with two other players if you’re short.
Decide what you’re willing to lose. The Free Loadout is basic, but it costs nothing and you keep it if you extract with it. That makes it ideal for your first few runs or for scouting. When you take your own gear, the sensible minimum is a plate carrier, a backpack, a weapon and a medkit.
Use your secure slots. Better backpacks (Medium and up) come with secure slots, and anything in them survives a failed exfil. Put your most valuable find in there first, not your ammo.
Choose your ride in. Walking in is free. Vehicles cost DMZ Cash, and the price climbs steeply:
| Infil | Cost |
|---|---|
| On foot | Free |
| Polaris Dagor A1 | 5,000 |
| LTV | 25,000 |
| Helicopter | 50,000 |
| Cargo plane | 100,000 |
Early on, go in on foot and save the cash for gear.
In Hajin
Watch the threat level. It sits under your compass at the top of the screen and runs from Low to Extreme. It reflects the AI around you, not other players, so a “Low” reading doesn’t mean you’re alone. In hot areas, quiet kills (melee, throwing knives, suppressed weapons) keep things from escalating.
Know what’s worth carrying. Resources (Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals) go into their own pouch and break down automatically, so they never eat stash space. Recipes and Weapon Manuals are always worth grabbing: each one pays 5,000 DMZ Cash if you get it out.
Hunting players has a cost. You can ignore other squads or go after them. Every player kill raises your Bounty, and at four kills you’re Wanted, which alerts nearby Operators. At the top tier, Most Wanted, everyone can see roughly where you are. Bounty Hunters who extract with your Dog Tag cash in on you. You can shed a bounty by paying it off at a Bounty Station, or it ends when you die without extracting.
Getting out
Extract to bank everything you found. Cash goes into your Bank, which has a cap you raise through upgrades. Fail to extract and you lose everything outside your secure slots.
If your Operator dies
A dead Operator goes MIA and loses their Dog Tag. You can pay DMZ Cash to recover them (the price scales with their Trait Points), and they come back with their Traits and Dog Tag but no gear. You can also dismiss them instead. Everyone starts with two Active Duty Operator slots (three with the Vault Edition), and you unlock more as you level, so it’s worth spreading your risk.
Back at base (FOB)
Most stations are open from the start, including your stash, loadouts, Orders, the firing range and the Bounty Leaderboard. The rest unlock as you level:
| Station | Unlocks at |
|---|---|
| 3D Printer | DMZ level 2 |
| Vendor | DMZ level 5 |
| Gunsmith | DMZ level 10 |
| Dog Tag Case | DMZ level 20 |
| Boss Board | After your second DMZ Order |
The Gunsmith builds weapons for DMZ Cash, with up to five attachments; a base M4 is around 5,000. Weapons you find in the field can carry up to eight attachments, which is one more reason to extract with good finds. The 3D Printer crafts gear and is also how you upgrade the base itself.
Your stash starts at 40 items and 12 weapons, counted separately. Cash and resources are shared by all your Active Duty Operators.
Bosses
The Boss Board tracks Lieutenants and Commanders. You can buy one deployment’s worth of intel on a Lieutenant with DMZ Cash. Killing one drops a Dog Tag Case and a weapon, and extracting with the case moves you up the board. Commanders such as the Colossus and Deathstalker are always in the Exclusion Zone, and their intel can’t be bought. Season 1 adds more of both; see our Season 1 roadmap.
Levelling up
There are two progress bars:
- DMZ level (1–70): this unlocks stations, upgrades, recipes, Operators, survival kits and fire support. Only DMZ XP counts, but DMZ XP also feeds your main multiplayer level.
- Operator Dog Tags: each Operator climbs 18 levels: Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Damascus and Onyx, three steps each. Every level earns a Trait Point for one of three trees (Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist). At Onyx III, an Operator can Prestige by handing in a set of weapons, armour, a backpack, ingredients and a large sum of cash (200,000 for the first Prestige, rising to 500,000). Each Prestige grants a random permanent trait, up to three.
At the end of every deployment, the After Action Report grades your run from F up to S++.
Quick checklist for new players
- Run the Free Loadout until you know the map.
- Put your best find in a secure slot straight away.
- Grab every Recipe and Weapon Manual you see.
- Avoid player fights until you can afford to lose your kit.
- Spread your gear across more than one Operator.
